Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) product design

I oversaw the design of features for the CCF product, which is the core of the platform. It enables customers to measure, manage, and reduce their carbon emissions. The features I designed include, organisational structure management, emission calculation processes, decarbonisation target setting, and data analysis tools.

Impact

The newly designed emission calculation feature, which is a self-serve experience, improved efficiency—reducing the completion time from over 3 hours to just 23 minutes. Also, with the suggested data grid solution, the number of line items we could deal with went from 1k to 10 million with no performance issues, so we could finally support the bigger-sized businesses in our business pipelines.

The redesigned org structure management feature reduced the time it takes to complete tasks by at least 75% (at least 4 hrs save).

Insights

Optimized data journey design

Identified that the challenge extended beyond individual features. The workflow from ingesting the data and calculation lacked clear definitions, leading to inefficiencies.

Visible Calculation Progress

Users were unable to monitor calculation progress, limiting their ability to take proactive or reactive actions during the process.

Brilliant basics to enhance the navigation and performance

Most CCF features handle massive volumes of data. However, legacy components such as data grids and tree structure diagrams were limited, lacked advanced navigation capabilities, and were unable to manage large datasets efficiently.

Design

Information architecture (IA)
When we started a rebuild project, we started creating two types of IAs: one tailored for business and a wider audience and another focused on engineers' technical requirements.

Does information architecture (IA) sound boring? Let me try.
Building a complex, high-quality product is only possible if multi-displinary teams are aligned. IA fosters effective communication and alignment. Just like a blueprint in construction, it shows how all the pieces fit together before any work begins—you wouldn't start laying bricks without a clear plan.

1) Experience in designing architecture to communicate with engineering teams and 2) high-level sitemap information architecture for business and broader audiences.
Key feature 01 — Organisational structure
  • Enabled a capability that allows users to easily generate and navigate large organizational structures.
  • Designed a flexible org chart solution that adapts to clients' evolving needs, including changes driven by climate-related regulations and frequent organizational restructuring.

Key feature 02 — Emission calculation
  • Transformed a 100% manual process (handled by internal SMEs) into a fully self-serve calculation workflow.
  • Designed a high-performance data grid with advanced navigation features and seamless data editing capabilities, ensuring a smooth user experience without performance issues.
Key feature 03 — Analysis
  • Purpose-driven analysis interaction model: Developed an analysis model that offers 'jobs-to-be-done' related tools and filters information effectively, enhancing user focus and decision-making.
  • Innovative data visualization tools: Designed cutting-edge visualisations, including the Marginal Abatement Cost Curve (MACC) and a novel waterfall chart. These unique tools provide deep insights while leveraging available front-end CSS libraries, enabling the engineering team to implement them efficiently and effectively.

Learnings

As a product designer, my biggest learning was that the ultimate goal is not just to gain buy-in or persuade through presentations but to make things happen.

  • Scalability and fast iteration mindset: Designing with scalability in mind and fostering a culture of rapid iteration enabled the team to quickly adapt to the evolving demands of the climate tech industry.

  • Performance optimization: Thoughtful design choices, such as data grid library, can have a substantial impact on both backend performance and user experience.

  • Proactive problem-solving: Actively researching and integrating appropriate services and libraries can significantly improve product capabilities and build speed.

  • Beyond the design: Being a design leader goes beyond delivering great design—it’s about aligning teams, advocating for resources, and tying design to business strategy.

CCF product 'self-serve' roadmap
The key role of a product designer is to establish a clear vision and facilitate effective communication to ensure the product stays on the right path, even as we continuously iterate on priorities and develop new features.
